VIDEO IN PRODUCTION — “WE WILL HARBOR YOU: A HISTORY OF MINNESOTA’S BATTERED WOMEN’S MOVEMENT”
Historian Terri Hawthorne and
producer Kathleen Laughlin previewed at their April 15th fundraiser a 27 minute
work-in-progress of their video, “We Will Harbor You: A History of
Minnesota’s Battered Women’s Movement.” The project is nearing its final
filming and production stages and is still in need of finishing funds. They
have gathered material and videotaped many hours of interviews to document the
domestic violence movement that began with Women’s Advocates. Many of the
founding mothers are featured discussing the struggles and triumphs they
encountered in their quest to establish a crisis line and shelter for women and
children escaping domestic violence. In the video, on the stage, or in the
audience, the evening introduced us to Women’s Advocates founders Sharon
Rice Vaughan, Bernice Sisson, Monica Erler, Pat Murphy and Lois Severson, among
others; to Elva Martinez, a child resident; and finally, to current Executive
Director Raeone Loscalzo. They are still looking for the original divorce
booklet that was written in 1972, old photos, documents, slides, film or video
from the seventies and eighties pertaining to the movement and the early
shelters in Minnesota. Please contact them with your stories or possible
funding sources. Their biggest constraint will be the 56 minutes running time
of public television! Their website www.wewillharboryou.com has more information, or contact
Terri at 651-645-4427 or Kathleen at 612-332-1979.
